Career
Greg Camp, along with his musical comrades Mark Harwell, Kevin Coleman, and Paul De Lisle, laid the foundation for Smash Mouth. Before his Smash Mouth journey, Harwell wore the hat of a rapper in the group F.O.S. This multi-talented artist also graced our screens during the sixth season of VH1’s The Surreal Life back in 2006, showing us his reality TV chops. But that’s not all; he made appearances on various television and radio shows, even popping up in the 2001 movie Rat Race. Yet, what truly catapulted him into the limelight was the iconic track “All Star.”
Beyond the musical realm, Harwell extended his artistic reach. In 2013, he lent his voice to two tunes, “Beside Myself” and “Everything Just Crazy,” for the South Korean-Chinese animated flick Pororo, The Racing Adventure.
However, there were moments of concern along the way. During a Smash Mouth gig in Urbana, Illinois, on that fateful day of August 27, 2016, Harwell’s strength gave out on stage, leading to an ambulance ride to the hospital. The show went on, though, with De Lisle taking up the vocal reins.
Fast forward to October 2021, when the band graced a beer and wine festival at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York. Sadly, Harwell’s behavior raised eyebrows as he seemed under the influence, even engaging in alarming gestures. This event led to his declaration of retirement, citing persistent health troubles as the cause.
Personal life
Harwell experienced the heartbreaking loss of his precious son, Presley, in July 2001 due to a severe illness called acute lymphocytic leukemia when Presley was just six months old. After this tragic event, Harwell decided to establish a special fund for medical research in memory of his beloved child, Presley.

Steve Harwell faced a tough battle with alcoholism. Back in 2013, he got hit with cardiomyopathy and Wernicke encephalopathy due to his years of heavy drinking. These conditions messed with his heart and messed up his speech and memory. It got so bad that he had to retire from his career.
Fast forward to September 3, 2023, and we heard that Harwell was in hospice care, dealing with the final stages of chronic liver failure. The news was grim, saying he only had a few days left. Sadly, he passed away the very next day at his home in Boise, Idaho, when he was just 56 years old.
In memory of Steve, the band’s manager, Robert Hayes, had this to say: “Steve lived a life like a shooting star, burning brightly across the universe before fading away.”
